We've been in New York for weeks, working our way from Staten Island, up through the City, and out to the end of Long Island. There is a lot to see!

We picked up our son Andrew while we were at the marina at Staten Island. We used this as a home base for a week or so. We were able squeeze in a whirlwind day of seeing the sights. I'm sure we missed a few things, but we did get to see a lot. Trains, Ferries, Subways, Busses, and a lot of walking - whew. Too many photos to include them all, but here's a handful of selfies!

Boating through New York harbor is interesting - tons of ferries, barges, power boats, tour boats, jet skis, etc. On top of that add a strong current that you have to time correctly. Our trip worked out great with an overnight anchorage right at the Statue of Liberty! Luckily we arrived there a few days before they shut it all down for the Sail250 tall ship parade on the 4th. It was a crazy busy place to anchor, with constant waves from all the boats. Things did calm down after sunset and we had a great calm night's sleep. A little excitement in the morning when our anchor caught a cable, but I had watched someone else struggle with the same thing the night before, so I learned the technique - it only took us s few minutes to get free.

We left early in the morning to catch the current up the East River. We timed that right since the current was going about as fast as our boat can go. We would have really struggled if we had been fighting against that.

The next week was spend slowly moving east along Long Island. We got caught in the heat wave with little or no wind... a lot of motoring and trying to keep cool. It is a very busy area with busy ports. Many of the anchorage areas have been taken over by mooring balls. That makes it easy to tie-up for the night, but they are expensive to rent! I think this is something we'll have to get used to as we continue north. We had never been to Long Island - lots of fancy houses and boats here. We also learned that the Hamptons is the area at the very east end of Long Island. We arrived there for the 4th of July weekend - Crazy... but that will be a story for another day.
